Vicar Revs Up Service For Bikers
By lisa boardman lisa.boardman@essnmedia.co.uk
AS PETROL fumes filled the air, it was obvious a certain group of leather-clad attendees at a village church were not your average Sunday worshippers.
Nestled beside the elderly and young village families in their Sunday best was an eclectic mix of bikers listening intently to a special motorcycle service at St Peter’s Church, Woodmansterne.
Arranged by keen biker the Reverend Mick Hough, the service on Sunday attracted a throng of bike enthusiasts, including members of the Christian Motorcyclists Association.
Mr Hough, 49, who rides a Yamaha XJ 900, explained: “As a motorcyclist I thought it would be a good idea to try and encourage more blokes into the church.”
He added: “People tend to think that motorbikes and churches don’t go together but I know a lot of members of the clergy who ride.”
The reverend, who has ridden for 20 years, said the service in Rectory Lane drew a crowd of about 120 people – a mix of bikers and regular church members – to listen to specific bike-related prayers to keep people “on track” with God.
“It was a really successful day and I hope to arrange another one soon,” he told The Mirror.
“We had a motorbike in the centre of the church and we also had a bike-related quiz to test peoples’ knowledge of bikes over the years.
“People came up to me afterwards and said they hadn’t had this much fun in church in years.”
Other revelations from the day included a reformed Hells Angel who found God and is now a member of the Christian Motorcyclists’ Association, and an elderly Woodmansterne lady who revealed she used to ride the infamous wall of death in the early 1950s.
After the service a group of 10 bikers rode to Brighton.
Mr Hough, who’s 12-year-old daughter rode on the back with him, said: “Riding a bike gives you a sense of freedom and adventure.
“It heightens your awareness because you have to know what’s going on around you at all times.”

Planting Seeds Of Faith in Motorcycle Riders
BY MIRANDA VIGLIETTI
Striking up conversation comes naturally to Bob Bowers whenever he meets a fellow motorcyclist on the road.
The blue Harley-Davidson he rides is not just a talking point or a form of recreation. Bowers uses his bike for evangelism through his role as a motorcycle chaplain. “The bike is part of my ministry,” Bowers said. “It’s a tool to get to people who could not be touched any other way.”
Bowers, 49, of Park Forest, began serving as the motorcycle chaplain for Calumet Harley-Davidson in Munster, Ind., two years ago.
